In 2023, the Czech established Blue Economy sectors employ about 27 100 people and generates around €1.1 billion in GVA. Understandably, the Blue Economy has a very marginal impact on the Czech workforce, employing 0.6% of the national workforce. This share has increased slightly over the previous year (+0.5%). Czech Blue Economy contributes to 0.4% of the overall GVA in 2023, declining 4.6% since the previous year.
The Czech Blue Economy is led by Marine living resources and Port activities[1], which contribute to 53% and 40% of Czech blue jobs in 2023. These percentages are in line with those recorded in 2019-2022, indicating that these sectors were not impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. In terms of GVA, Marine living resources and Port activities cover 51% and 43% of the Blue Economy GVA in 2023.
[1]Czech Republic is a landlocked Country, therfore the term 'Port activity' should be interpreted solely as a statistical category. This category may include in particular: cargo handling, warehousing, hydraulic engineering works and services related to water transport.
In 2023, Czech Republic is respectively the 9th and 12th largest contributor in terms of employment and GVA for Port activities in EU.
While the Czech Republic is a landlocked country, it still engages with aspects of the blue economy through some institutional bodies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for fisheries and aquaculture, the Czech Statistical Office responsible for statistical data, and the Ministry of Transport – the Czech Maritime Authority – responisble for maritime navigation, the maritime register, seafarers’ qualifications, and related EU and IMO matters.
Currently, a few educational opportunities are offered by universities in the country, such as the MSc in Fishery and Protection of Waters and the PhD in Fishery at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice.

This interactive dashboard presents the evolution of the blue economy for Czech Republic. It is designed to provide insights into key economic indicators over time.
At the top of the dashboard, there is a drop-down menu that allows users to select one of the following data categories:
- Employment: Number of jobs and workforce trends in the blue economy sectors.
- Gross Value Added (GVA): The contribution of the blue economy to the national economy.
- Turnover and Gross Profit: Revenue and profitability metrics of blue economy industries.
- Investment: Capital investment levels in blue economy sectors.
Once a category is selected, the main panel updates to display relevant visualisations, such as line charts or bar graphs, showing trends over time. These visualisations are accompanied by labels, legends, and tooltips to ensure clarity and accessibility.
The dashboard is navigable via keyboard and compatible with screen readers. All interactive elements are clearly labeled, and data visualisations include alternative text descriptions summarising key insights.
