Find out how citizens can support the scientific process and the management of fisheries at the Fisheries Science Seminar which is taking place on 30 June in Brussels.
The seminar will serve as a discussion forum, with numerous networking opportunities and debates on the potential of Citizen Science to impact fisheries and environmental policies. The event will also emphasise the need of citizen science in implementing an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and gathering data on recreational fisheries.
Addressing the challenges and opportunities
EU Commissioner Sinkevičius will attend and speak about the importance of incorporating citizen science into fisheries management. In addition, The Joint Research Centre will offer an overview of the potential of marine Citizen Science to inform policy making and policy implementation. As well as addressing the challenges and opportunities to use citizen science to improve the stock assessment for pelagic stocks in the northeast Atlantic. There will also be an insight into citizen science and its contribution to increasing knowledge of Greek marine biodiversity, with a final presentation focused on the use of citizen science to record catches by marine recreational anglers in Ireland.

The half-day Fisheries Science Seminar will be hybrid, giving the audience the possibility to attend physically and online. It will bring together a wide range of stakeholders such as scientists, fisheries and environmental administrations in Member States and at the regional level, the fishing sector, NGOs, and representatives of the European Commission, Parliament, Council and Member States.
