Algae Biotechnology: turning to algae to answer our environmental problems

euronews Ocean
euronews

In an episode of OCEAN, a form of microscopic marine organism called microalgae is investigated for its potential to revolutionise the agriculture sector and offer environmentally friendly alternatives to plastics. Microalgae strains that can produce fertilisers and other products for farmers while also cleaning up local waste water have been discovered by researchers in Almeria, Spain.

Aligning with the European Union's Farm to Fork strategy, a local biotech company has developed commercial alternative to agricultural chemicals made from microalgae ingredients (SABANA and ALGAENAUTS projects). Innovative bioplastics developed with microalgae in Brittany, France have the potential to be more sustainable than those made from agricultural crops (NENU2PHAR), while aquaculture researchers experiment with microalgae to improve industrial fish feeds in Algarve, Portugal (REALM).

OCEAN is a Euronews magazine in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE). It features monthly 8-minute videos, where we discover fascinating projects and developments related to the ocean and coastal communities.
