Commission publishes documents on sustainable aquaculture

The European Commission has published three staff working documents (SWDs) containing recommendations and good practices on how to address obstacles to aquaculture growth across many EU Member States; notably;

(1) Energy Transition in the EU aquaculture sector - covers energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources of energy to reduce the carbon footprint in primary aquaculture production.

(2) Climate-change Adaptation in the Aquaculture Sector - gathers possible adaptation measures and good practices that can be applied at both administrative and farm levels to make the European aquaculture sector more resilient to climate-related changes.

(3) Access to Space and Water for Freshwater and Land-based Aquaculture - identifies good practices and provides Member State authorities and policymakers with potential solutions to the challenges they face in freshwater and land-based aquaculture planning.

Through the EU Aquaculture Assistance Mechanism, the Commission will provide dedicated training on the three SWDs to the Member State authorities responsible for aquaculture development. An e-learning module for each will also be made available on the same website.
