The ocean, seas and coastal areas provide a wealth of opportunities for economic growth, improved livelihoods, resilience, innovation, sustainability transition, and employment creation.
Yet today the blue economy is challenged by an ageing workforce and a lack of workers for many related economic activities, including in emerging sectors such as ocean renewable energy and blue biotechnology.
A strategic approach to solving blue skills shortages in the EU is indispensable. With this in mind, the European Commission - Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has decided to launch a one-year study to analyse the blue economy industry needs, existing academic/training programmes, and consequent gaps, so as to help inform a better policy response at EU level and provide very valuable information to Member States.
In the frame of this activity a survey has just been launched. This survey aims to gather valuable insights from stakeholders in the blue economy.
Your participation is crucial for understanding the current state of blue skills, identifying gaps, and developing strategies for future skill development in this vital economic sector.
Your responses will help shape the future workforce of the blue economy. You will receive the survey results via e-mail, and your (anonymised) input will inform a policy brief that will be published at the end of the study.
The survey will stay online until 4 November 2024.
