The European Commission has released its 2024 Annual Economic Report on the European Union fishing fleet, revealing a substantial improvement in the sector's economic performance. Gross profits have increased from €1,254 million in 2022 to €1,364 million in 2023 and are projected to reach €1,673 million in 2024. European Commission economists contributed to this comprehensive report, which highlights several factors contributing to the improvement, including a decrease in fuel prices, progress in achieving sustainable stocks, higher average first-sale prices for some key species, and a reduction in fishing capacity.
Produced by experts from the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) and European Commission economists, the Annual Economic Report (AER) provides valuable data, trends, and analyses used for policy-making purposes by the European Commission, EU Member States, and stakeholders, including Advisory Councils and NGOs. The report supports the preparation of impact assessments on fisheries policies, socio-economic assessments, and the scientific advice in the common fisheries policy.
