As a landlocked country, the Blue Economy is not a main contributor to Slovakian national economy as a whole. Nonetheless, the established sectors related to the Blue Economy directly employ almost 10 000 people and generate around €289 million in GVA in Slovakia (2021). The Blue Economy has a limited impact on the Slovakian economy, representing in 2021 about 0.4% and 0.3% of the national employment and GVA, respectively.
This notwithstanding, the share of Blue Economy-related activities to the national economy has increased steadily since 2009. In absolute terms, employment increased from 2 366 people in 2009 (0.2% of national employment) to 2 561 people (0.4%) in 2021. For its part, GVA increased from €33 million in 2009 (0.1% of national GVA) to €289 million (0.3%) in 2021. The Slovakian Blue Economy performance was not significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, losing only 2% of its jobs, part of which were regained in 2021.
The sector that contributed most to the Slovakian Blue Economy is Port-related activities, which contributed by approximately two thirds to the national Blue Economy jobs and GVA in 2021. The second largest contributing sector is Marine Living resources (mainly, distribution and processing of fish products), with 10% and 11% of Blue Economy employment and GVA, respectively. This is followed by Shipbuilding and repair, that represented approximately 10% and 7% of the national Blue Economy employment and GVA, respectively.
