JRC biomass report

The fourth edition of a comprehensive public report by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has been published, entirely dedicated to biomass. The report also marks the tenth anniversary of the JRC Biomass Mandate. Topics include:

  • Quantifying biomass supply and use related to the European Union's forest
  • Agriculture
  • Marine ecosystems.

Addressed are the  associated waste streams, trade issues, and the competing requirements for biomass, exacerbated by the different political narratives surrounding bioeconomy. Also highlighted is the need for system’s level assessments to facilitate policy coherence. A range of regenerative actions are proposed.
Essentially, the report reflects the direct work of JRC scientific staff and their collaborators, bringing together expertise from several units of the organisation, all united by a common focus on biomass.
