WINBLUE Project analyses role of women in the Blue Economy

The WINBLUE project addresses the gender status in the blue economy sectors and provides a qualitative analysis to understand gender bias within this sector.

The partners provided data about women's current situation and status in selected blue economy sectors: blue biotechnologies, fisheries and aquaculture, sustainable coastal and marine tourism, offshore renewable energy, and cutting-edge marine technologies.

It addresses the need to mitigate gender equality challenges, identifies challenges in data collection, gaps in data availability, and provides a basis for establishing future recommendations.

Key findings include:

  • There is a lack of data to infer gender-related biases in blue economy sectors. This is especially evident in emerging ICT sectors, such as AI and robotics.

  • Monitoring mechanisms must be established, providing data collection, analysis, and reporting guidelines.

  • Lack of harmonisation of indicators and data collection strategy.

  • There is a need to establish data collection practices coupled with analyses. This can lead to evidence-based activities that diminish inequalities and better position women in blue economy sectors. Data collection and reporting should be part of employees’ responsibilities in blue economy sectors.

  • Monitoring mechanisms must be established, providing data collection, analysis, and reporting guidelines.

  • The highest percentage of female employees can be found in the tourism sector, while fisheries aquaculture, robotics and AI have the lowest proportion of female employees.
